    Music and the Youngest Learners

Babies and toddlers naturally have an affinity towards rhythm and love listening to different types of music. Give them a good grounding by playing them songs created for their age group, but also try out different musical genres and see how they respond. Just like with food, this expands their palette and helps their imagination when it comes to creating their own music. As soon as they’re able to hold things, you can let them test out the noises that different items can make — something as simple as giving them a saucepan and a wooden spoon can be enough to encourage this curiosity and foster a love of rhythm. While it may not sound like music to your ears, this improvisation gives them the space to experiment with different melodies, rhythms, and harmonies!

    Building their Interest

As they grow, continue to encourage your child to sing along to songs, join a choir or singing group, and participate in dance classes or performances, as these are innate ways for them to express themselves musically. When they’re ready, begin to provide musical instruments, such as a xylophone, recorder or keyboard, and set aside a dedicated space for practicing and playing music at home. If you have a musical background or play an instrument yourself, be a role model for them by practicing regularly and discussing your passion with them.

As your little ones get more familiar with rhythm, you can begin giving them challenges such as asking them to create a melody using only three notes or compose a song based on a specific theme or emotion. Show an interest in their compositions, songs, or musical experiments, providing positive and constructive feedback to help them refine their ideas. Making sure they have the right tools, including notebooks to record their ideas, recording equipment, or music composition software can also help them to build skills such as understanding the basics of song structure, chord progressions, and lyrics, while still allowing them the freedom to experiment and explore.

    Determining Musical Interest and Ability

Of course, there are different ways to enjoy music, so it’s good to work out if their interest is casual or if it’s something they want to pursue more seriously. You don’t want to force them into something that they don’t show a genuine interest in, as this can lead to resentment later on. Sometimes it’s obvious that your child has a particular love of music and sometimes you’ll only start to notice this as they grow older. Pay attention to what they enjoy — do they just like to hang out playing in their room or are they constantly wanting to make the next grade? Do they follow a strict practise schedule or not worry too much if they haven’t had time that week? Do they prefer a teacher who pushes their skills forwards or someone who comes to jam with them and play their favourite tunes? If they show a natural aptitude for learning and progressing, quickly grasping concepts and making noticeable improvements, their interests may grow more than someone who finds it very difficult.

It’s also helpful to keep a close eye on how your child reacts to music. Expressing strong emotions when they listen to music or seeming to lose themselves in a song can be clear indicators of musical inclination. Children may also have a strong musical memory, showing an ability to remember and recall melodies or lyrics from songs they have heard before. Pay attention to your child’s sense of timing and rhythm and how accurate they are at reproducing pitch and maintaining a steady beat when playing or singing. If music is highly important to them, you’ll notice a tendency to use music as a means of self-expression, often singing, humming, or making up their own songs. By paying attention at each stage of your child’s development, you can make sure you follow their lead and provide opportunities for further exploration and development of their musical talents. Always approach this with patience, support, and a focus on enjoyment rather than solely on talent assessment.

The Benefits of Learning an Instrument

Playing a musical instrument has been shown to positively impact children’s brain development in various ways.

    1. Fine motor skills are developed, as it requires precise finger movements and hand-eye coordination. Practicing these movements strengthens neural connections between the motor cortex and other regions of the brain, improving dexterity and motor coordination.
    2. It can enhance cognitive abilities, as it requires reading music notation, understanding rhythm and timing, and coordinating fine motor skills all at the same time. This can help with memory, attention, concentration, and problem-solving.
    3. Auditory processing skills improve, as they learn to discern different pitches, tones and harmonies, and learn to interpret sounds. This can have a positive impact on language development and communication skills.
    4. It can develop memory formation and retrieval processes, as players must memorize pieces, scales, and chord progressions. The process of learning to read sheet music and translate it into meaningful actions also reinforces cognitive processes related to learning and comprehension.
    5. Participation in ensembles, bands and orchestras promotes teamwork, collaboration, and social interaction, which increases emotional and social intelligence and empathy.
    6. Children must be disciplined and focused if they want to improve in their playing, as well as learning to manage their time effectively. These skills play a huge role in executive function, which is crucial to academic performance and day-to-day life.
    7. Regular practice and learning stimulate the growth of new neural pathways, strengthening existing connections and enhancing the brain’s ability to reorganize and form new connections.
    8. The therapeutic effects of music can reduce stress and anxiety and improve overall emotional well-being.

Of course, all these benefits depend on the level of engagement and the duration of learning an instrument, but it does suggest that it’s still worth giving your child the opportunity even if they have no intention of becoming the next Mozart.

    Enjoy the Process

Above all, be aware that putting too much emphasis on talent assessment and the end result may put your child off music. Celebrate the exploration and personal growth which take place during the process of creating music and you’ll provide them with a good foundation for a lifelong love of music.
